The scheduled road closure on the A420 between the Watchfield roundabout and Faringdon is for the installation of the surface treatment ‘Surface Dressing’ as conducted in Great Coxwell in 2019 and Fernham Road in 2018 which is utilised to prolong to service life and structural integrity of the existing carriageway without the need for more costly and disruptive treatments.
The anticipated working date is currently Saturday 18th April with a single days duration. The current expectation will be to install the road closure from 0600 and hopefully complete by 1200/1300 unless we experience breakdowns, unforeseen circumstances or weather delays. Following installation there will be additional visits to conduct post sweeping (to remove surplus chippings) and re-install road markings and road studs but these activities will be conducted under smaller scale traffic management and avoiding any peak times. At all other times the road will be fully open and accessible as usual.
Given the nature of the A420 if we are unable to undertake works as planned the road closure will be re-programmed for another weekend (if possible) rather than a more disruptive weekday. Due to the type of work we are able to maintain access & egress for residents and businesses within the closure extents and for bus services throughout, with minor to no delays experienced. A signed diversion route will be in place for the duration of the surfacing, the route is extensive as we are required to cater for all vehicle types, alternative routes are available via local knowledge.
